New York, NY (April 22, 2024) – Over the weekend, Governor Hochul released an executive budget containing a housing deal that adds new protections to market rate tenants and incentives for new affordable housing, yet at the same time, rolls back tenant protections in the 2019 Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act (HSTPA) and includes severely weakened Good Cause Eviction measures.

ALBANY, NY (April 19, 2024) - Today, advocates and housing counselors from across the state celebrated the funding of Homeowner Protection Program (HOPP), which provides free housing counseling and legal services to New York homeowners at risk of foreclosure, in the FY25 state budget but expressed disappointment and concern over the sweeping of $40 million from the state’s Interest on Lawyer Account (IOLA) to fund HOPP.

BRONX, NY (April 10, 2024) - On Monday, rent-stabilized tenants residing at 1187 Anderson Avenue, 1195 Anderson Avenue and 1230 Woodycrest Avenue filed a new contempt motion against their landlord over its failure to make agreed-upon repairs.

NEW YORK, NY (March 14, 2024) - Today nearly 40 tenants across at five buildings in East Harlem (112, 118, 122, 124, and 126 East 103rd Street) announced a lawsuit filed by The Legal Aid Society and Legal Services NYC against their landlord, Isaac Kaissirer and his firm Emerald Equities, alleging that the troubled real estate firm has stolen tens of thousands of dollars worth of security deposits and unlawfully commingled them with the landlord’s own operating funds — something the firm has done before.

NEW YORK, NY (March 14, 2024) - Today, New York Legislators, including Senate Housing Chair Brian Kavanagh, Assembly Housing Chair Linda B. Rosenthal, State Senator Jamaal Bailey, Assemblymember Sarah Clark, Assemblymember Jeffrey Dinowitz, Assemblymember Michaelle Solages, and Assemblymember Latrice Walker, joined advocates and homeowners from across the state to urge Gov. Hochul to fund the Homeowner Protection Program (HOPP), the state’s only program that provides free legal help and housing counseling to homeowners targeted by mortgage fraud, scams and foreclosures in every county of the state. Both the State Senate and Assembly included $40 million for HOPP in their one house bills this week.
