Statement from Legal Services NYC on Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s New Block by Block Housing Plan
New York, NY – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani just unveiled a sweeping new plan to address NYC’s housing crisis, Block by Block: The Housing Plan for a New Era.
Below is a statement from Shervon M. Small, executive director of Legal Services NYC (LSNYC), the largest provider of free civil legal services in the nation:
“Mayor Mamdani’s Block by Block plan is a bold and urgently needed response to New York City’s housing crisis. From expanding affordable housing and strengthening accountability for negligent landlords to improving NYCHA and cutting through city agency bureaucracy, this plan tackles the everyday barriers that keep too many New Yorkers from safe, stable housing.
“We are especially encouraged by the administration’s commitment to bold paradigm shifts to combat and correct deep power imbalances that undermine our communities’ stability and our city’s well-being, including real homeownership opportunities, Community Land Trust engagement, and tenant ownership.
“As one of the city’s largest providers of free legal services for tenants, Legal Services NYC looks forward to partnering with the administration to turn this vision into real protections and lasting housing security for New Yorkers for years to come.”
