Smoothing the Path to Citizenship at Staten Island Legal Services
An article in the June 17th Staten Island Advance focuses on the new pro-bono immigration services being offered by Staten Island Legal Services (SILS), a program of Legal Services NYC, beginning today.
The program is aimed at helping immigrants to navigate the path to legal citizenship, which has advantages such as making it easier to receive Social Security benefits and participate in other government programs. Staten Island Legal Services will also be providing free legal help to U.S. residents and citizens wishing to obtain visas for family members outside of the United States.
“We are really focused on looking at the population of people who have some documentation already, “said Nancy Goldhill, SILS Project Director.
The new program is made possible in part by a $140,000 City Council grant which allowed SILS to hire a full-time immigration attorney.
U.S. residents needing assistance with applying for citizenship may either go to the SILS office at 36 Richmond Terrace (directly across from the ferry terminal) today, June 18th, between 9:30am and 7pm or call 718-233-5480 to make an appointment for a later date.
