NYS Senate Allocates New Funding for Civil Legal Services
The New York State Senate has approved a funding resolution allocating
the $4.4 million appropriated for legal services in the FY2009-2010
budget. The appropriation, which will benefit civil and criminal legal
services programs across the state, marks the first time that the
Senate has provided meaningful support for the legal programs that
enable the poor to secure unemployment insurance benefits, avoid
evictions, and keep their families together.
Legal Services NYC is scheduled to receive 36% of the funding set aside for New York City-based civil legal services programs, or $588,341. The funding resolution must be passed by the New York State Assembly before it becomes final.
Legal Services NYC recognizes that that the competition for funding this year was particularly intense, making the Senate’s successful efforts to distribute the funds equitably all the more important. This landmark new funding will ensure greater access to critical legal service programs and representation for New York’s low-income residents.
