The Jazz for Justice Benefit is one of the premier legal events in New York City, raising significant unrestricted funds that enable us to be responsive to the needs of the vulnerable communities we serve. At each year's benefit, we present awards to leaders in the legal and business community who are staunch supporters of our mission to fight poverty and seek racial, social and economic justice for the most vulnerable in our society. Past honorees include David Levine of Bloomberg L.P., Peter Beshar of Marsh & McLennan, Stacey Friedman of JPMorgan Chase, Debo Adegbile of WilmerHale, Joseph Wayland of Chubb, Sandra Leung of Bristol-Myers Squibb, Michael Fricklas of Viacom, and Brackett Denniston of GE.

Secretary Jeh Johnson is a partner in the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, LLP and has served four separate times in government, as Secretary of Homeland Security (2013-2017), General Counsel of the Department of Defense (2009-2012), General Counsel of the Air Force (1998-2001), and an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York (1989-1991). Jeh has been affiliated with Paul Weiss on and off since 1984, and became the firm’s first African American partner in 1994. Jeh is currently on the board of directors of Lockheed Martin and U.S. Steel. In June 2020 the Chief Judge of New York asked Jeh to undertake a comprehensive review of racial bias in the state court system. He then delivered a 100-page public report with a number observations and recommendations, all of which the Chief Judge will adopt. Jeh is the 2018 recipient of the Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Award, presented at the Reagan Presidential Library, for “contribut[ing] greatly to the defense of our nation,” and “guiding us through turbulent times with courage and wisdom.” Johnson is a graduate of Morehouse College and Columbia Law School and is the recipient of ten honorary degrees.

 

Martin Lebwohl is a Managing Director of D. E. Shaw & Co., L.P. and co-General Counsel to The D. E. Shaw Group. Martin joined the D. E. Shaw group in 2007 and has served as co-General Counsel since 2017. Prior to joining The D. E. Shaw Group, he served as General Counsel and Senior Vice President for Business Affairs at Starz Media, LLC and its predecessor, IDT Entertainment, Inc. Before that, he was an associate in the corporate department of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. He graduated cum laude from Harvard College, where he was designated a John Harvard Scholar, and received his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was a senior editor of the Columbia Law Review and a James Kent Scholar. Martin serves on the Advisory Board of the David H. Sonabend Center for Israel at the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan.
