Legal Services NYC has forged new partnerships with the law
firms of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP and Milbank Tweed Hadley &
McCloy LLP, as well as with Williams College, to help meet the dramatic increased need for
civil legal services for the poor across New York City.

The Statewide Campaign for Civil Legal Services – made up of several dozen organizations that provide free civil legal services to the poor from around the State, including Legal Services NYC – today applauded Governor David Paterson’s amendment to include $1 million in general state appropriations to fund civil legal services in the 2009-10 budget, while cautioning that much more needs to be done to meet increased demand for legal services for those hardest hit by the current economic crisis.

An Administrative Law Judge ruled in favor of South Brooklyn Legal Services' client, determining that the client's website and freelance work did not constitute ownership of a business and thus did not disqualify him from receiving unemployment benefits.

navigate, legal services advocates are reeling from the news that the
first budget submitted by Governor David Paterson fails to include any
