On October 4, the LS-NYC's New York City Bankruptcy Assistance Project (NYC BAP) held its annual reception honoring pro bono volunteers who donated their time and talent to the program in the past year. Over 60 guests gathered in recognition of their service, including the Hon. Stuart M. Bernstein, Chief Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court SDNY, and the Hon. Carla Craig, Chief Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court EDNY, who presented the awards. Hon. Elizabeth S. Strong, Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court EDNY, delivered remarks.

Manhattan Legal Services (a program of Legal Services NYC) Director of Litigation Chaumtoli Huq was honored Thursday night by the Chhaya Community Development Corp., which named her one of three "Architects of Change." Chhaya CDC is a community-based non-profit
organization focused on improving access to housing opportunities,
resources, and information for South Asian Americans throughout New
York City and the metropolitan area, advocating for community and
economic development and justice within South Asian and other immigrant
communities.

Washington, DC -- Nearly a million poor people who seek help for civil
legal problems, such as foreclosures and domestic violence, will be
turned away this year by the nation's largest nonprofit legal aid
network because of insufficient resources, the Legal Services
Corporation (LSC) projects in a report released on September 30th. As the LSC's New York City grantee, Legal Services NYC this year anticipates turning away
at least 32,658 people and being unable to serve fully another 8,666
individuals.

The measure signed by Governor Paterson on October 10th toughens civil penalties against landlords who violate the Division of Housing
and Community Renewal rent-regulated housing codes. The measure aims to protect tenants from being forced out of their
apartments by landlord harassment.
