DC -- Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) will be remembered at the Legal
Services Corporation (LSC) and at civil legal aid organizations throughout
the nation as a champion for equal access to justice, Legal Services Corporation President
Helaine M. Barnett said today.
"Senator Kennedy's longtime support for LSC was invaluable and
consequential for the clients and communities that are served by
LSC-funded legal aid attorneys every day," LSC President Barnett said.
"In addition to civil legal assistance, his extraordinary career in
public service focused on legislation and issues of utmost importance

August 20, 2009, Brooklyn, NY—Two long-time Sunset Park residents, five local churches and a
community group have
filed a lawsuit in New York State Supreme Court challenging the City's proposed rezoning of 128 blocks in
Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The lawsuit, brought by South Brooklyn Legal Services (a program of Legal Services NYC) and the Asian
American Legal Defense and Education Fund, charges that the
City violated state and environmental laws by failing to take a hard
look at the significant impacts of this rezoning plan upon the
neighborhood character.

New York, NY, August 11, 2009— Legal Services NYC today filed a lawsuit in State Supreme Court on behalf of low-income New Yorkers who have been denied access to vital benefits, such as Food Stamps and Medicaid, solely because they cannot communicate in English, despite a city law requiring the Human Resources Administration (HRA) to provide translation and interpretation services to these individuals. The lawsuit alleges widespread civil rights violations at HRA centers across the five boroughs.
