LawHelp NY Addresses Growing Need for Immigration Information

LawHelp.org/NY, the award winning legal information website, announces the expansion and revamping of their Immigration section to make it easier for the immigrant community to find the legal help they need.  Legal Services NYC is a founding member of the New York LawHelp Consortium which provides LawHelp.org/NY.

 

Staten Island Leads City in Rate of Foreclosures

PropertyShark.com last week reported that Staten Island led the city in the rate of foreclosures in the third quarter, and continued to post the highest percentage of foreclosures per household among the five boroughs. Staten Island Legal Services (a program of Legal Services NYC) represents many of the families facing the potential loss of their homes. South Brooklyn Legal Services Fights for Family's Right to Stay in Their Home

The October 1st issue of the Village Voice focuses on a couple who in 2006 purchased an 8-unit property in Prospect Heights and promptly began evicting its longtime low-rent tenants in order to create a 20-room remodeled home for themselves. Brent Meltzer, Senior Housing Attorney at South Brooklyn Legal Services (a program of Legal Services NYC), is leading the team representing the family living in the building's lone remaining rent-stabilized unit.

Low-Income Tenant Advocates Challenge Rent Guidelines Board Over "Poor Tax"

9/13/08- The Legal Aid Society and Legal Services NYC brought legal action today in state Supreme Court against the New York City Rent Guidelines Board (RGB).  The advocates seek to strike down what has been characterized as “a poor tax” against low-income tenants who have lived in an apartment for more than six years and pay less than $1,000 a month in rent.
