The Village Voice's Tom Robbins writes:

By every measure, we are in for a long, hard winter, one that has already turned punishingly cold on the streets, in City Hall, and in Albany. It is colder yet for thousands suddenly out of work, sucked under by Wall Street's grasping greed. Others, who never knew the security of a decent, steady job even before this savage downturn, face the severing of government lifelines as politicians scramble to slice their budgets, starting from the bottom up.

All of which is good reason to take a moment to give thanks to those in the city's trenches who have quietly gone about the tough, everyday work of remedying inequality, as well as those who have stood tall against abuses of power.

 

New Loan Modification Scams Detailed in Crain's

A new Crain’s article details fraudulent loan modification organizations that target mortgage holders. Jessica Attie, co-director of South Brooklyn Legal Services’ (a program of Legal Services NYC) Foreclosure Prevention Project, is one of the individuals consulted in the article about this increasingly common scam that she calls an epidemic. These firms bombard homeowners with mailings and phone calls, scour public records for homeowners whose properties are in danger of being foreclosed, and advertise on Craigslist.

 

City Cuts $550G From Pledged $2M Fund to Protect Renters

On the eve of the City Council's 2006 vote to approve rezoning to allow development of the Brooklyn Waterfront, the Bloomberg Administration committed $2 million toward the protection of longtime tenants threatened with displacement. Now, that promised funding has been cut by more than 25%, and tenant rights advocates are speaking out.

 

LawHelp NY Named Semi-Finalist for Collaboration Award

The New York LawHelp Consortium, responsible for developing and maintaining LawHelp/NY, a Web site providing free civil legal information for low-income New Yorkers, has been selected as a semi-finalist for a $250,000 award recognizing exceptional non-profit partnerships. Legal Services NYC is a founding member of the Consortium.

      
 

SILS Addresses Domestic Violence and Technology

An October 30th conference organized by Staten Island Legal Services (a program of Legal Services NYC) addressed the connection between domestic violence and technology: how technology can be used and abused to harass, stalk, monitor and control domestic violence survivors. Alicia Simpson, a staff attorney in SILS' Family Law Unit, was a panelist at the event.
