Victory for Dislocated Families

Forty immigrant families living in rent stabilized apartments destined to be seized by the city for a park and parking lot in Downtown Brooklyn have been given some hope. In response to a law suit filed by South Brooklyn Legal Services (a program of Legal Services NYC) and the law office of Candace C. Carponter, the city has agreed to give the tenants substantial relocation benefits and protections, including Section 8 subsidies and a preference in all city-supervised affordable developments.

The law suit challenged the city’s use of eminent domain without a relocation plan for the tenants of 402, 404 and 406 Albee Square.

“The terms of the settlement addresses all of our concerns,” said Jennifer Levy, the attorney handling the case.
