House Subcommittee Approves $40 Million Increase for Legal Services Corporation

Washington, DC--The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies last week approved $390 million for the Legal Services Corporation's (LSC) FY 2009 budget, a $40 million, or 11 percent, increase over current funding levels. LSC is a major funder of Legal Services NYC.

LSC is an independent, non-profit Corporation created by Congress in 1974 to promote equal access to justice and to provide high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans. The Corporation gives grants to independent, local programs--in 2008, 137 programs (including Legal Services NYC) with more than 900 offices nationwide.
