On May 26th, Jessica Attie, co-director of the Foreclosure Prevention Project at South Brooklyn Legal Services, was featured on National Public Radio’s
All Things Considered. The piece brought attention to a new scheme being
used by con artists to take advantage of homeowners facing foreclosure as a
result of the housing crisis. In April, Ms. Attie also appeared on ABC's World News with Charles Gibson and Good Morning America.
A May 4th New York Post article reports on further complications at a Brooklyn Yeshiva that has been been attempting to evict elderly tenants from Section 8 subsidized apartments. Legal Services NYC's Jonathan Twersky is advocating on the tenants' behalf.
A May 5th New York Times article reports that private firms are buying up rent-regulated buildings, and tenant
advocates say the new owners have begun harassing tenants to increase vacancies. Attorneys from our Queens Legal Services Office, among others, are representing tenants in the targeted buildings.
Mr. M is an eighty-two (82) year old U.S. citizen who supports himself solely through Social Security and Supplemental Security payments of less than $800 a month.
Jonathan Twersky, Legal Services NYC Brooklyn Branch, is representing a group of Manhattan Beach residents who have been served with eviction notices. The group includes eight elderly residents with Section 8 subsidized units.
