LSNYC is committed to protecting immigrants, the elderly, people with disabilities, veterans and other at-risk populations by attacking the predatory lenders and debt collection industry that preys on our most vulnerable citizens through illegal practices, including:
- Attempting to collect debts they know the debtor does not owe;
- Threatening to take protected government benefits;
- Misrepresenting their right to collect a debt;
- Harassing the so-called debtor;
- Threatening legal action on time-barred debts;
- Suing with no proof of the underlying debt.
We provide legal advice and representation, including defense in consumer debt lawsuits and representation in affirmative lawsuits against debt collectors who have engaged in illegal collection practices. In addition, we provide education on consumer rights to community groups and other advocates. Lastly, we engage in policy advocacy work aimed at curbing abuses in debt collection practice.
