Ms. A was abandoned in Algeria after suffering years of violence at the hands of her husband. She was able to enter the U.S. and was determined to put her traumatic past behind and build a new life. But her temporary visa was about to expire and she was in danger of being deported. Faced with returning to a life of abuse, Ms. A. turned to LSNYC for help. Our interdisciplinary team of attorneys and advocates worked tirelessly to provide her with domestic violence counseling and help her to apply for financial assistance. Most crucially, LSNYC advocated for Ms. A to become a permanent citizen. And happily, just last month, Ms. A was sworn in as a citizen of the United States!
Today, Ms. A is safe from domestic violence and secure under the protections afforded by her legal status. Well on the road to building a new life for herself, she is also giving back to others who face a similar situation. She is currently working at the shelter where she once lived, counseling other survivors of violence.
Ms. A’s story is like those of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers across the City: individuals and families who simultaneously struggle with low incomes and problems that can only be solved with legal assistance that they cannot afford.
In the past year alone, LSNYC has helped more than 80,000 New Yorkers living in poverty and obtained over $30M in benefits for clients in need. We have successfully leveraged the resources and talents of the private bar, securing over 30,000 pro bono hours from major New York City law firms in service of our clients. But there is still so much more to be done.
