Legal Services NYC provides meaningful access to justice for low-income New Yorkers.
The Legal Services NYC programs and projects were spawned by the War on Poverty of the 1960's. Our many offices and outreach centers throughout New York City are part of the communities where our clients live. The neighborhood-based programs that comprise the Legal Services NYC system foster broad involvement in the work Legal Services NYC does through Board participation, local priority-setting, and community partnerships. We attract people with fire in their bellies- it has to be that way; if they didn't have a passion for justice they wouldn't be of any use to our clients. The Legal Services NYC system has enormous strength and reach. We provide core services in family, housing, benefits, consumer, and education law, and have innovative projects for clients with HIV, for elderly homeowners facing foreclosure, for victims of domestic violence, for people moving off welfare and into the workforce, for kids who need special education and for people with limited English proficiency unable to navigate the courts and administrative agencies that affect their lives. Our offices bring some of the finest litigation, and produce some of the most useful professional and community training and educational material anywhere. Our strong community-based programs and projects work in concert- with our communities, with our colleagues in the private bar and with other public interest organizations- to tackle the most challenging problems faced by our client communities.
